UCAS Code: W232 route A; E232 route B
This unique and exciting course develops your creativity in textile design within an intellectually stimulating learning and research environment. A framework of academic studies, delivered by experts from a range of design disciplines, gives a dynamic context to your specialist studies.
In Year 1, you will undertake core studies in the historic, cultural and technological aspects of art & design. Alongside your academic work, you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of design, with a view to developing skills in drawing, painting and the use of colour.
In Year 2, you will develop your academic understanding of the core subjects and an awareness of professional standards. You will focus your studio practice and specialise in one of the following: mixed media textile design; textiles for fashion; knitted textiles; woven textiles. If you choose either the mixed media textiles or textiles for fashion specialisms, you will study textile modules based upon mixed-media practice. This includes materials manipulation, digital fabric printing, repeat pattern drafting, drawing and painting. If you select the textiles for fashion specialism, you will undertake modules that explore the basic skills required to design and make garments, and which develop your understanding of the manufacturing process. Approximately half of your studies in year 2 and 3 will be in fashion design, taught by our fashion design team. If you select the woven or knitted textiles specialism, you will develop innovative designs, suited to commercial manufacture, which are based on original visual research and development.
In Year 3, you will work towards a final exhibition of design work and produce a written investigation into a textiles’ subject of your choice.
On completion of this course, you will be equipped for a range of opportunities in employment or postgraduate study. These include careers in creative design and the related services, such as buying, marketing and the retail sector.
