If you missed the first highly praised exhibition of the School of Design’s Yorkshire Fashion Archive at Salts Mill, or would like the opportunity to view it again, you are invited to attend ‘Dress Rehearsal II’ at the University of Leeds.
This stunning exhibition showcases a selection of beautiful and informative garments donated to the archive, along with the history and images of the garments and their wearers – including their actual ‘voices’ and anecdotes. The Yorkshire Fashion Archive provides a fascinating insight into Yorkshire life in the 20th Century, as revealed through clothing and accessories; and photos, information and anecdotes about the garments, their wearers and the situations in which they were worn. Key to the project is the belief that a garment is more than just ‘the threads of its construction’ - it represents (the life of) the person who wore it. ‘Dress Rehearsal II’ runs from 20th April – 17th May 2012; Tues – Fri, 9:30 - 4:30; at the University of Leeds International Textiles Archive (ULITA), St Winifred’s Chapel, Maurice Keyworth Building, The University of Leeds. Admission is free.
School of Design Professor’s Invention Features on Channel 4 Series
The invention of the School of Design’s Professor Stephen Burkinshaw - his ‘virtually waterless washing machine’, featured on Channel 4’s new series ‘Home of the Future’.
The programme shows how a typical family can use cutting edge technologies and gadgets to tackle challenges such as energy and water use, as they seek to adapt to low carbon living.
Professor Burkinshaw’s machine uses up to 90% less water than a normal washing machine, by drawing cleaning power from reusable, stain-absorbing nylon beads.
Professor Burkinshaw is an internationally-recognised expert in the science of textiles and dyeing and founder of the University of Leeds’ spin-out company Xeros Ltd., which secured funding and worked with major companies to commercialise their patented technology.
Xeros’ Chief Executive, Bill Westwater has also been selected by The Big Bang - the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK, to participate in its ‘Future Minds’ panel.
Chaired by Gadget Show presenter Ortis Deley, Future Minds will ask business leaders to predict what the world may be like in 2050 and will help visitors to understand how companies like Xeros are pioneering technology aimed at creating more sustainable approaches to using and protecting natural resources.
Future Minds takes place at The Big Bang, on 15-16 March at the NEC Birmingham.
