Stephen Burkinshaw

Biography

Professor Burkinshaw holds the Chair in Textile Chemistry. He is a colour chemist by training and has carried out research in many aspects of coloration, mostly in collaboration with many of the world's largest chemical companies. During his time at Leeds, he has held several senior posts including Head of the School of Design and Dean of the Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communication. He has supervised over 75 PhD and MSc students, as well as several postdoctoral research scientists; he is currently Editor-in-chief of the Elsevier journal, Dyes and Pigments which is the leading colour chemistry scientific journal.

Research Interests

Professor Burkinshaw's research interests concern the chemistry and application of dyes and pigments, colour measurement and textile finishing. He has published extensively across a wide range of research areas in scientific journals, books and patents (full publication list). His research activities have so far resulted in the formation of the University of Leeds spin-out company, Xeros Ltd., a new company focused on the development of "virtually waterless" laundry cleaning. Xeros is the brand name for a patented polymer based cleaning that creates step-change advantage in the cost and environmental impact of aqueous cleaning.
