About Me

My approach to studying colour is an interdisciplinary one. Following my degrees in Colour Chemistry (BSc) and Colour Physics (PhD) at Leeds University I held academic posts in a School of Neuroscience (Keele University) and a School of Engineering (Derby University) before returning to Leeds as Professor of Colour Science and Technology in 2003. I am currently Head of School of Design (2006-2011). In 1998 I was invited to join the International Editorial Board of the Journal of Coloration Technology and in 2006 helped to launch a new journal (as editor) in Colour: Design and Creativity. This latter appointment was very exciting for me and allowed me to further explore the relationship between art and science in the field of colour. I am also an active partner of the European-funded project CREATE which is a training network for young researchers interested in colour from all disciplines.

Recently I was awarded a Fellowship of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (2008) and the Davies Medal by the Royal Photographic Society (2008) for my work on colour imaging.

I currently have three strong research interests: Measurement of colour and appearance, colour design, and colour management.

In the area of measurement of colour and appearance I am currently working on the design of digital imaging systems for the assessment of tooth colour. In 2009 I was invited to speak at the inaugral annual meeting of the Society for Colour and Appearance in Dentistry in Houston, Texas. I was also lucky enough to be invited to address the British Society for Restorative Dentistry at their annual meeting at The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. In the area of colour design I am currently engaged in research to explore colour harmony and to develop robust approaches to the efficient use of colour in marketing, branding and product design. I am particularly keen to recruit more PhD students in this area toi augment my research group. In the area of colour management I enjoy understanding the relationships between the colour spaces of various devices (cameras, printers etc.); my interest in computational colour science led to the publication of a book by John Wiley called Computational Colour Science using MATLAB in 2004. I am happy to receive applications from students to study for PhD in any area of colour. Please email me to discuss possible projects.

I am passionate about colour education and enjoying discussing colour in my blog, Colour Chat, which you can access by clicking on the button on the top-left of this page.
